Law Firm of the Year: Austria
Vienna firm bpv Hugel had a strong 2017, with turnover up 7 per cent. It had an excellent showing in M&A with a slew of major deals in the financial services sector, notably acting for Raiffeisen Zentralbank Österreich AG (RZB) on its merger with listed Raiffeisen Bank International AG (RBI), the highest profile M&A transaction in the banking sector in Austria in 2017.
Last year the firm implemented a legal tech task force that brought together transactional, litigation and corporate lawyers together with internal and external IT and AI experts to address the upcoming trends in the automatisation of the legal industry.
Continuing a strategy of organic independent development, the firm’s alliance with three other Central European firms has yielded coverage in Bratislava, Bucharest, Budapest and Prague. Fifty per cent of the firm’s transactional and tax work is now cross-border
The judges found bpv Hugel an ‘impressive’ contender, praising its expansion through cross-border collaboration and increase in market share, as well as its fledgling examination of the opportunities presented by technology in delivering legal services.
