Law Firm of the Year: Benelux


Three years ago Dutch-based firm AKD decided to transform itself into a full-service Benelux operation, launching a Luxembourg office and targeting high-quality cross=-border work from major international firms. Its financial results prove the firm must be doing something right. It saw a double-digit increase in turnover in 2017, PEP has soared 40 per cent over three years and AKD is now the fourth-largest firm in the Netherlands. Major recent initiatives include a focus on Turkish business, a targeted lateral hiring programme that has brought in high-quality corporate and tax partners, and a number of technology projects including piloting AI. Internally, AKD has enhanced pay for junior associates and overhauled its training academy. The judges praised AKD for its energy and execution, Strong financials on top and bottom line. In particular, the judges noted strong evidence of investment and growth, people investment and use of technology: ‘Clear vision and strategy, and an exceptional year.’
