Global firm of the year in Europe
Latham & Watkins
It has been another year of exceptional growth for global star Latham & Watkins, whose European practice grew 15 per cent in 2017-18. Spain and Germany have seen particular investment, with top-tier hires across those jurisdictions. There has been particular success in private equity across Europe, with the firm advising eight of the ten top PE firms; including Carlyle, Global Infrastructure Partners and EQT, and topping the European buyout table in 2017, as well as advising on more than 90 high-yield offerings with an aggregate deal value of more than US$70 billion. Latham has represented clients such as Telefonica, Siemens and VEON on more than 125 European M&A transactions, both public and private, with an aggregate deal value of US$156 billion. While Latham’s corporate progress seems unstoppable, it also devotes serious commitment to pro bono work, from collaborating with TrustLaw on a global anti-FGM project to developing a resource that addresses the lack of information held by legal departments in developing their own pro bono initiatives.
The judges said: ‘Another great year for Latham, with continued commitment to Europe shown through their hiring and their results. Their deal examples exhibited strong cross-border work for global clients. Their anti-FGM research is a standout example of their pro bono commitment, and they also show internal commitment to diversity and training.’
