Law firm of the year: Austria
Eisenberger & Herzog
Founded in 2005 by former Freshfields lawyers, in 2017 and 2018 medium-sized Eisenberger Herzog put on a growth spurt. Historically consisting of 11 partners, it welcomed seven more to partnership in 2016-17 and that investment has borne fruit.
In just over a decade turnover has quintupled and its strategy of remaining an independent domestic practice is strong; the firm has offices in Vienna, Graz and Klagenfurt, and has attracted multiple referrals from elite global firms including the magic circle, and clients including ProSiebenSat 1, Lufthansa, Immofinanz Group, Wienerberger Group, Macquarie and Wien Energy Group.
The firm has not neglected things closer to home, with a variety of flexible working models on offer for its staff, and internal innovation awards for the best tech ideas. The judges commended the firm’s ‘very strong growth’, ‘impressive’ investment in technology and ‘high quality’ practice, ‘They’re doing the right thing from a gender perspective and there’s top work for top clients’.
Highly commended: Schoenherr
A strong and steady year for Schoenherr, which continued a strong M&A run for the likes of real estate groups BUWOG and Adler, Swiss energy utility Alpiq and US investors Advent International and Starwood Capital, and a renewed focus on litigation, investigations and white-collar crime. The judges noted its ‘continued expansion of all practice areas’ and its status as a ‘clear regional leader’.
