Law firm of the year: Benelux
Over the past two years AKD, whose centre of gravity is in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, but has offices in Eindhoven, Breda, Brussels and Luxembourg, has become a significant player in Benelux and has posted turnover growth of 10 per cent a year since 2016.
Notable among its numerous hires in 2018 was its investment in Luxembourg in particular, which positions the firm strongly within one of the fastest-growing markets in Europe. Its other eye-catching international talent investment has been in an Asian practice, with particular focus on South Korea, Japan and China. The momentum is clearly there, in the first half of 2018, AKD climbed to second in the Mergermarket league tables; a strong achievement for an upper-mid-market firm.
Recent initiatives have included a career and parenthood programme for staff, and an innovation board to spearhead the firm’s technology initiatives. The judges praised AKD’s ‘impressive growth’: ‘There is evidence of programmes being put in place to develop a diverse and innovative business – it’s early days but there are tangible results. It’s not just chat.’
